About Coaching
| |
|
Coaching now is part of the standard leadership development training for elite executives and talented up-and-comers at IBM, Motorola, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and Hewlett Packard. These companies are discreetly giving their best prospects what star athletes have long had: a trusted adviser to help reach their goals.

Below are the questions I'm often asked about my coaching structure. Just click on the question you want answered, or scroll through the answers below.
What is coaching?
Coaching may be defined as 'the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another' (Downey, 1999). It's not training. It's not consulting. And it's definitely not therapy. Professional athletes have long used a coach to help them to reach their full potential. Just like a sports coach, a personal coach will help you improve your performance, be more effective, and achieve the wins you want in your personal or professional life.
How does it work?
The coaching relationship is an alliance designed by you & your coach in a way that fits you best. Coaching is a new concept for many people. The best way to find out what coaching is and how you can benefit is to experience it for yourself! We offer a free, no obligation, introductory consultation to allow you to discover whether coaching is right for you. What have you got to lose by trying it? Who works with a coach?
Entrepreneurs, business owners, professionals and people in transition are some of the people who typically use a coach. Regardless of their professional endeavour or place in life, all of my clients have one thing in common: they are successful, resourceful, intelligent individuals who want to get even more out of their lives.Coaching isn't for everyone.
It produces the best results when:
a) individuals are motivated to grow, learn and take action;
b) there is a gap between where you are now and where you want to be.
What kinds of things do we work on?
You decide the agenda for the coaching, and it can be a mixture of both long-term goals and pressing, current issues.
Some examples from previous clients include:
- A first-time entrepreneur who wanted a strategy and support to transition out of the banking sector to start up a property lettings company.
- A civil-servant dealing with an ongoing difficult family situation, who wanted a fresh perspective and ideas on how handle the situation in the best possible way.
- A senior-level teacher considering a move into a new career to increase her income, but uncertain which direction to take.
- An HR professional who was working so hard that there was no time to pursue any personal goals, and who wanted to have a personal life.
- A CEO who was facing imminent retirement, and wanted to create a strategy to transition out of a full time role, but still maintain some kind of active business contribution.
What benefits can I expect?
Studies on executive coaching (The Manchester Review, 2001; MetrixGlobal, 2001) have demonstrated that a well-executed coaching programme can achieve 500%-600% return on investment. The results from coaching vary from individual to individual, as would be expected. However, typical benefits reported include (CIPD, 2004 training & development survey):
